Canada GST HST PST Calculator

Canadian sales tax is federal GST plus a provincial layer, and which combination applies depends entirely on the province.

GST alone, GST plus PST, or a harmonised HST

Alberta and the territories charge federal GST only. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec charge GST plus a separate provincial tax. The Atlantic provinces and Ontario charge a single harmonised HST that combines both.

This calculator takes both rates so it covers all three cases: enter a provincial rate of zero for a GST-only province, or the full harmonised rate as the federal figure for an HST province.

Most provinces apply both to the base, and Quebec once did not

In most PST provinces, both taxes apply to the pre-tax price rather than PST applying to a GST-inclusive amount. This calculator follows that convention, so the two rates are simply added to the base.

Quebec historically applied QST to the GST-inclusive amount, which produced a slightly higher effective rate. That practice ended, but it is the reason the question is worth asking rather than assuming.

Selling across provinces means charging the buyer’s rate

Place-of-supply rules generally mean the rate applied is that of the province where the goods or services are delivered or consumed, not where the business is located. A seller in Alberta shipping to Ontario charges Ontario HST.

For an online business selling nationally this means maintaining rates for every province rather than one rate. Getting it wrong understates or overstates tax on every affected order.

Input tax credits apply to GST and HST, but not always to PST

Registered businesses recover GST and HST paid on business inputs through input tax credits, so those taxes are not a cost in the middle of a supply chain. Provincial sales tax in the non-harmonised provinces is often not recoverable, which makes it a genuine cost of doing business there.

That asymmetry matters when comparing the cost of operating across provinces, and it is a reason the headline combined rate understates the real difference between an HST province and a PST one.

  1. Published the calculator with its formula, worked example, assumptions, limitations and a bespoke guide, and added an automated formula test suite covering it.
  2. Tested federal GST with a provincial rate applied to the same pre-tax base, covering GST-only, GST plus PST and harmonised cases.
  3. Tested that a zero provincial rate reduces the result to federal GST alone, and that both rates apply to the base rather than compounding.
