How to choose a calculator
Use the Solar Panel Roof-Fit Calculator for the full sizing-to-payback flow: enter your usable roof area and country to get a system size and panel count, an estimated yearly generation figure, and — with a cost per kW and electricity rate — a net cost, incentive, and simple payback period, plus an optional EMI/loan-payment figure if you plan to finance the system. Use the Gutter Calculator’s Size My Gutters mode to turn a roof area and local rainfall intensity into a required flow capacity and (in the USA) a K-style size recommendation, or its Materials & Cost mode to turn a gutter run length into sections, hangers, downspouts, and an installed-cost estimate.
Use the Insulation Calculator to turn an area and target R-value into a depth and a quantity — bags for blown-in fiberglass, cellulose, or mineral wool, packages for batts, rolls, or rigid board, or board-feet for spray foam — with an optional material cost estimate. The energy half of the category starts away from the roofline. Common mistakes and limits
- Entering total roof area instead of usable area for either calculator — chimneys, vents, skylights, walkways, and shaded sections all reduce what is actually available.
- Assuming the US federal 30% residential solar tax credit still applies in 2026 — it does not; it expired for residential systems installed after December 31, 2025.
- Using a rainfall intensity or peak-sun-hours figure for the wrong part of a large country — both solar irradiance and design rainfall intensity vary substantially by region within India, the USA, Australia, and even the UK.
- Treating a box gutter, valley gutter, or other internal/parapet drainage the same as a simple eaves gutter — these carry overflow-safety design requirements the Gutter Calculator flags but does not replace.
- Expecting the Roofing Calculator to measure a roof from a photo, satellite image, or address — it computes from the length, width, and pitch you enter, not automated imagery.
- Switching the Decking Calculator’s units mid-project without re-checking every field — its unit toggle converts your entries automatically, but mixing a feet entry with a metres entry after switching back manually will throw off every downstream number.
- Forgetting to check local fence-height limits, boundary setbacks, or homeowners’-association rules before building — the Fence Calculator sizes materials, not permits.
When not to rely on calculators alone
All six calculators estimate sizing, generation, capacity, quantity, or cost from the figures you enter — none replaces a licensed installer’s or engineer’s site survey, a structural assessment of your roof, walls, deck frame, or fence line, or your utility’s, government’s, or building-code authority’s official documentation. Subsidy amounts, tax treatment, rainfall design values, R-value recommendations, and material costs change over time and vary by exact location; confirm current figures before making a purchase decision.
Source and calculation basis
The Solar calculator’s roof-area-to-system-size and generation formulas use commonly published rooftop-solar rules of thumb, and India’s subsidy figure follows the published PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana structure. The Gutter Calculator’s sizing formulas follow SMACNA (USA), AS/NZS 3500.3 (Australia/NZ), and BS EN 12056-3 (UK). The Insulation Calculator’s R-per-inch figures follow published manufacturer and DOE/ENERGY STAR reference values for each material. The Roofing Calculator’s pitch-multiplier and squares formulas follow commonly published roofing-estimation methods, cross-checked against multiple independent sources. The Decking Calculator’s joist-span figures follow the 2021 IRC, and its board-gap default follows the UK’s Timber Decking & Cladding Association specification. The Fence Calculator’s post/rail/picket/concrete formulas follow commonly published fence-building rules of thumb, cross-checked against an independently published worked example. All country/region defaults are general, sourced starting points — see each calculator’s own Sources section — not a live data feed, so adjust them to your specific location and a current quote.

Which countries does the Solar Panel Roof-Fit Calculator support?
India, the USA, and the UK have built-in default peak-sun-hours, cost-per-kW, and electricity-rate figures, plus India’s central rooftop-solar subsidy formula. Choosing "Other / custom" lets you enter your own figures for any other country — the underlying roof-area, generation, and payback formulas work the same way everywhere.
Does this include government subsidies or tax credits?
For India, yes — the calculator applies the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana central subsidy formula automatically based on your system size. For the USA, the federal residential solar tax credit does not apply to systems installed in 2026, so no federal credit is assumed by default; enter any state, utility, or other incentive you qualify for manually. For the UK, residential solar is already 0% VAT-rated, and Smart Export Guarantee income (if any) can be added as an optional yearly figure. All of these change over time — verify the current rules before relying on the number.
Is this the same as an installer’s quote or a structural survey?
No. None of the calculators in this section assess your roof’s, wall’s, deck frame’s, or property boundary's structural or regulatory suitability directly — get a professional site survey and an installer quote before purchasing a solar system, a full gutter replacement, a significant insulation upgrade, a new roof, a new deck, or a new fence.
Which regions does the Gutter Calculator support?
The USA (SMACNA method, gallons/minute), Australia/NZ (AS/NZS 3500.3, litres/minute), the UK (BS EN 12056-3, litres/minute), and a custom mode for any other region where you supply your own local rainfall intensity. Box gutters and other internal/parapet drainage carry their own overflow-safety design requirements that the calculator flags but does not replace.
Does the Insulation Calculator estimate my energy-bill savings?
No — it estimates depth, quantity, and material cost only. Actual energy savings depend on your climate, HVAC system, current insulation condition, and fuel prices, none of which a generic calculator can honestly estimate — see the Insulation Calculator’s own FAQ for the full explanation.
Does the Roofing Calculator measure my roof from a photo, satellite image, or address?
No — it computes area from the length, width, and pitch you enter. For automated aerial or address-based measurement, you'd need a dedicated aerial-measurement service or a professional report; enter whatever dimensions that gives you here for the squares, materials, and cost numbers.
Does the Decking Calculator work in metric as well as imperial units?
Yes — switch its Measurement Units field to Metric and every dimension converts automatically to metres or millimetres, running the same formulas as the imperial default. It also supports both face-screwed and hidden-clip fastening, since the fastener count differs between the two.
Which regions does the Fence Calculator support for cost?
The USA, Canada, the UK, and Australia have built-in default costs per unit length for wood, vinyl, and chain-link (in feet or metres, whichever is standard), plus a custom mode for any other region where you enter your own figures. The post, rail, and picket formulas in its other mode work in feet or metres everywhere.
