Both times are first converted to seconds, so minutes, hours, and days on either side never need to match.

Change = ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100

Negative means the new time is shorter (faster); positive means it grew longer.

What the tool does is express one span of time as a percentage of another, and every figure on this page comes from that single division. Percentage of a Total puts the whole you entered in the denominator; Percentage Change puts the old time there and makes the numerator the gap between the two. Either way, both spans are converted to the same unit first — seconds is simplest, and it is what this tool uses — then divided and multiplied by 100. That conversion step is the reason any mix of seconds, minutes, hours, and days works on either side without the units matching. What percentage of 5 minutes is 30 seconds? Converted to a common unit, 5 minutes is 300 seconds, and 30 ÷ 300 × 100 = 10%. Hours behave the same way once you have decided what the hours are a percentage of: to turn hours worked into a percentage of a standard workday, divide the hours worked by the length of that workday and multiply by 100 — 6 worked hours out of an 8-hour day is (6 ÷ 8) × 100 = 75%.

Two limits fall out of the division itself. A whole — or an old time — of zero has no percentage at all, and values very close to zero produce very large or undefined percentages rather than useful ones; the calculator flags a zero denominator rather than showing a false result. And no authority is cited for this formula because none exists to cite: a percentage of a duration is elementary arithmetic, shown in full in the two cards above. Rules about what counts toward a duration — a court’s, an employer’s, a guideline’s — come from those bodies, not from mathematics.

9 minutes is exactly 15% of an hour; 40 minutes is 66.67%

Minutes into a percentage is the same division carried out in the smaller unit — (minutes ÷ total minutes) × 100 — and the total is almost always 60, which makes the common marks worth knowing by heart. 5 minutes is 8.33% of an hour (5 ÷ 60 × 100), or one twelfth. 20 minutes is 33.33%, or one third. 40 minutes, the most-asked version of this question, is 66.67%. 55 minutes is 91.67% — five minutes short of the full hour. Only a few land clean, and 9 minutes is one of them: exactly 15% (9 ÷ 60 × 100), or three-twentieths. Every 5-minute mark from 5 to 60, on the same (Part ÷ Whole) × 100 formula:

Three of those marks are one tap away: the presets above the calculator load 40 min of 1 hour, 20 min of 1 hour, and 5 min of 1 hour, with a fourth for 30 sec of 5 min, so you get the whole breakdown rather than the bare percentage. Each row in the table is computed by the same engine as the calculator itself rather than typed out by hand, so the two cannot disagree. For a mark the table does not list — 9 minutes, 37 minutes, 2 hours 15 minutes of a 9-hour day — enter it as the part, with 1 hour or whatever your real total is as the whole.

10% of 5 minutes is 30 seconds — the division run backwards

The calculator above takes a part and a whole and returns a percentage. The reverse question — you have the percentage and want the duration back — is the same relationship rearranged: Part = Percentage × Whole. 10% of 5 minutes is 0.5 minutes, or 30 seconds (5 × 0.10 = 0.5 min; 0.5 × 60 = 30 sec). 97% of 13 hours is 12.61 hours — 12 hours and 37 minutes (13 × 0.97 = 12.61; 0.61 × 60 ≈ 37 minutes). The arithmetic is the same division rearranged, but this tool does not solve in that direction, so do two things by hand: multiply rather than divide, then convert the decimal remainder back into minutes or seconds before you quote it. 12.61 hours is not 12 hours and 61 minutes.

A 10% faster 5K and a run at 90% of the old time are the same result

Percentage of a Total answers “what share is this?” — Percentage Change answers “how much did this improve or worsen?” Switch to that mode, enter the earlier (old) time and the later (new) time, and it computes (New − Old) ÷ Old × 100. A negative result means the new time is shorter — faster, or a time saving; a positive result means it grew longer.

A runner’s 5K time improves from 28 minutes to 25 minutes 12 seconds. In seconds, that is 1,680 down to 1,512 — a difference of −168 seconds, or −168 ÷ 1,680 × 100 = −10%: the new time is 10% faster, and equivalently, 90% of the old time. That second figure is what the “new time as % of old” row reports — the same comparison the other way round, and often the more intuitive one for a time-reduction or time-improvement question, since a task now taking 80% of its old time is a 20% time saving. Both numbers describe one run. Quote whichever your reader parses faster, but never both as though they were separate gains.

Lap, race, and run times use both modes. Percentage of a Total shows what share of a total race or run time a single lap or split took. Percentage Change compares two times directly — a new time against a previous one, or a single time against an average time — to give the percentage improvement (faster) or regression (slower).

24 hours against a 40-hour week is 60% — the whole is what you are really choosing

The part is usually obvious. The denominator is where the answer is actually decided, and one part measured against two defensible wholes gives two different, equally correct percentages. Part-time hours divided by the standard full-time hours for the same period give an employment fraction: 24 hours a week against a 40-hour full-time week is (24 ÷ 40) × 100 = 60%, with the “hours” unit on each side. Put a weekly figure over an annual one and the result is arithmetic without meaning.

The other pairs people bring here follow the same rule. Time listened or watched over total runtime gives progress — 1 hour 12 minutes into a 9-hour audiobook is about 13%. Minutes or hours elapsed over the full length of the hour, shift, or deadline window gives time elapsed. Overnights or days with one parent over the total nights or days in the period gives a parenting-time split. A lap over the total race time gives that lap’s share. In every case, decide the whole before you enter anything: a school year rather than a calendar year, a scheduled shift rather than one actually clocked, the audiobook’s 9-hour runtime rather than the days you have owned it.

Custody splits and “time and a half”: two percentages this will not settle

The custody arithmetic is well within this tool: divide the nights or days with one parent by the total nights or days in the period — 365 for a full year — in Percentage of a Total mode, and you have the parenting-time percentage many custody schedules use to describe a split. What the tool cannot supply is the counting rule. It does not know the specific method a court, employer, or guideline may require: some jurisdictions and guidelines count overnights only, others awake hours, others treat the school year and the summer separately. Confirm the required counting method with your court, guideline, or attorney before a figure from this page goes near a filing.

Child support goes one step further out of reach. This tool only performs the percentage division itself, not a child-support formula — many guidelines use a parenting-time percentage as one input among several (income, number of children, add-on expenses) in a larger statutory calculation this calculator does not model. Use it to check the time-share percentage itself, then apply your jurisdiction’s guideline or worksheet for the support amount.

“Time and a half” reads like a time percentage and is not one. It describes overtime pay at 1.5× (150%) the normal hourly rate — a pay multiplier, not a change in the length of the time itself. To calculate overtime pay, multiply the hourly rate by 1.5, and by the overtime hours worked. This calculator computes ratios between two durations, not wages: it does not calculate overtime pay, and it cannot, because it never asks for an hourly rate.

The same two cells in Excel can be off by 100×

A spreadsheet is where a correct method still returns a wrong number, because the formula depends on how the cells are stored — and getting that wrong is the most common source of a bad answer:

  • Plain numbers (e.g. minutes in both cells): =B2/C2*100 gives the percentage directly.
  • Real time values (e.g. formatted as h:mm, like 0:40 for 40 minutes): Excel and Sheets store these internally as a fraction of a 24-hour day, so =B2/C2 already returns the correct ratio — format that result cell as Percentage rather than multiplying by 100 again, which would inflate the answer 100×.
