Two meanings of “billion”
There are two systems for naming large numbers, and they agree up to a million and then diverge permanently.
The short scale multiplies by a thousand at each new name: a million is 106, a billion 109, a trillion 1012. This is what “billion” means in the United States, in modern British and Irish usage, and in English-language finance and journalism everywhere.
The long scale multiplies by a million at each new name, and fills the gaps with “-ard” words: a million is 106, a milliard 109, a billion 1012, a billiard 1015. This is what “billion” means in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese.
So a German Billion is a US trillion. The two words are spelled the same, need no translation, and differ by a factor of a thousand — which is precisely why the mistake survives translation software and copy-editing. Which countries use which
Short scale: the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland (since the 1970s), Canada in English, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Russia, Turkey, and English-language international finance and media generally.
Long scale: France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Poland, most of Scandinavia, and most of Spanish-speaking Latin America. In these languages a milliard, Milliarde or millardo is the word for 109 — the thing an English speaker calls a billion.
Two wrinkles are worth knowing. First, Britain switched: the long-scale billion of 1012was standard British usage until the Treasury adopted the American meaning in 1974, so a British source from the 1960s saying “billion” probably means a million million. Second, Canada is split along language lines — English Canadian usage is short scale, French Canadian usage historically long — so a bilingual document can carry both conventions in its two halves.
How to write it so nobody has to guess
The reason technical and scientific writing rarely uses these words at all is that there are unambiguous alternatives, and they cost nothing to adopt.
SI prefixes are defined without reference to either scale: giga is 109 and tera is 1012, in every country and every language. A figure written as 4.2 GW or 1.3 TB cannot be misread. Scientific notation is equally safe: 4.2 × 109 says exactly what it says.
Where the words are unavoidable — most journalism, most annual reports — the fix is to state the convention once. Financial statements conventionally do this in the header: “in thousands” or “in millions” above a column removes the ambiguity for everything below it, which is why that line exists and why deleting it to save space is a false economy.
Counting the zeros
The quickest sanity check on any large figure is the zero count, because it does not depend on knowing which convention was meant. A short-scale billion has nine zeros; a long-scale billion has twelve. A short-scale trillion has twelve; a long-scale trillion has eighteen.
Grouping helps more than counting. Written with thousands separators, a short-scale billion is 1,000,000,000 — three groups of three after the leading digit — and each additional short-scale name adds exactly one group. That is a shape the eye can read at a glance, which is why the tool shows every result grouped as well as plain.
Above 1015 a further problem appears that has nothing to do with naming: ordinary computer arithmetic stops being able to hold these numbers exactly. The limit is 9,007,199,254,740,991 — just over nine quadrillion — and past it a spreadsheet or a calculator built on standard floating point silently substitutes the nearest value it can represent. This page works in exact integers instead, so a nineteen-digit figure keeps its last digit.
Doing it in a spreadsheet
Scale conversion is one multiplication: millions to billions is =A1/1000 on the short scale, and a short-scale billion to a long-scale billion is =A1/1000 as well, because the gap is the same factor. Going from a long-scale billion to short-scale billions is =A1*1000.
For display rather than arithmetic, a custom number format keeps the underlying value intact while showing a shorter one: #,##0,,"M" displays a figure in millions with an M suffix — each comma before the closing quote divides the display by a thousand — and #,##0,,,"B" does the same in billions. The cell still holds the full number, which is what you want for any later calculation.
Watch the precision ceiling described above: a spreadsheet holds numbers as doubles, so a figure past about 9 × 1015 loses its trailing digits there too, and no amount of formatting brings them back. Keep such values as text and convert a copy.
