Common mistakes and limits
- Dividing cricket runs by innings instead of by dismissals — it understates every batter who has a not-out, and the gap widens the more often they finish unbeaten.
- Expecting a walk to lift a batting average. It cannot: a walk is not an at-bat, so it moves neither half of the fraction. On-base percentage is the statistic that credits it.
- Averaging a column of individual batting averages to get a team figure. That gives a bench player with nine at-bats the same weight as a regular with six hundred; the correct figure pools the raw hits and at-bats.
- Comparing a cricket average against a baseball one. They share a name and nothing else — one is runs per dismissal, the other a proportion of attempts.
When not to rely on calculators alone

Why is a cricket batting average calculated differently from a baseball one?
Because they measure different things. A baseball batting average asks how often a batter got a hit when they had a chance to, so the denominator is at-bats and the answer is a proportion that cannot exceed 1.000. A cricket batting average asks how many runs a batter scores before getting out, so the denominator is dismissals — innings played minus not-outs — and the answer is runs per dismissal, with no upper limit. That is why a batting average of 50 is outstanding in cricket and impossible in baseball, and why the two numbers should never be compared directly.
Are walks counted in a batting average?
No. A walk is a plate appearance but not an at-bat, so it changes neither the top nor the bottom of the batting-average fraction — a batter who walks four times in four trips finishes the day batting .000 with no at-bats recorded. Hit-by-pitches, sacrifice flies, sacrifice bunts and catcher’s interference are excluded on the same basis. The statistic that does credit a walk is on-base percentage, which the calculator computes alongside the average whenever you enter walks.
What counts as an at-bat, and what does not?
An at-bat is a plate appearance that ends in a hit, an out, or reaching base on an error or a fielder’s choice. What is excluded is the set of outcomes an official scorer treats as not the batter’s opportunity: a walk, a hit by pitch, a sacrifice fly, a sacrifice bunt, and catcher’s interference. Plate appearances minus those five is at-bats, which is why the calculator asks for them separately rather than making you subtract by hand.
How are not-outs treated in a cricket average?
The runs count, the innings does not. A not-out innings adds to the numerator and nothing to the denominator, because the batter was never dismissed and so that innings tells you nothing about how many runs they score before getting out. A batter who has never been dismissed at all has no average — the denominator is zero — and a scorecard prints a dash rather than a number. The calculator does the same, rather than reporting a misleading zero or infinity.
Whose scoring rules do these calculators follow?

Can this calculate expected batting average, or a projection?
No, and no tool that works from a box score can. Expected batting average is a tracking-data statistic — it is modelled from how hard and at what angle each ball was hit, and on some batted balls the batter’s sprint speed, none of which appears on a scorecard. Anything on this site that claimed to compute it from hits and at-bats would be inventing a number. These calculators report what actually happened, not what was likely to.
