The transaction fee applies to the postage you charged, not just the item
Etsy calculates its transaction fee on the total the buyer paid, which includes shipping. Sellers who price postage separately to keep the item price low often find the fee larger than expected, because the fee base did not shrink at all.
This is why the calculator takes shipping as its own input rather than folding it into the price. Moving money between the item and the postage line changes nothing about the fee, which is worth knowing before restructuring a listing to look cheaper.
Listing, transaction and payment processing each behave differently
The listing fee is a flat amount charged when an item is listed and again when it renews after a sale or an expiry, so a slow-moving item can be charged several times before it ever sells. The transaction fee is a percentage of the total. Payment processing is a percentage plus a fixed amount per order.
The fixed component is what makes small orders disproportionately expensive. On a low-value sale the flat payment charge can be a larger share of the fee than the percentage is, which is the arithmetic behind minimum order values and bundle pricing.
Net proceeds less product cost is the only number that matters
The calculator reports net proceeds after every fee, then subtracts what the item cost you to make or buy. That final figure is the profit on the order, and it is routinely a third smaller than sellers assume from the headline price.
Running it before setting a price is the useful direction. Working backwards from the margin you need, rather than forwards from a price that felt right, is what keeps a shop from selling steadily at a loss.
Offsite ads, currency conversion, and the taxes on top
Etsy charges an additional percentage on orders attributed to its offsite advertising, which is mandatory above a revenue threshold and can be the single largest fee on an order when it applies. Currency conversion and regulatory operating fees apply in some countries.
Sales tax and VAT are also outside this calculation. Etsy collects and remits them in many jurisdictions, so they are neither your revenue nor your cost — but the rate you enter for payment processing may itself be charged on the tax-inclusive total, which is worth confirming for your own market.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the transaction fee apply to shipping?
In most regions Etsy applies the transaction fee to the shipping you collect as well as the item price. That is why this calculator adds item price and shipping before applying the percentage.
Are the fee percentages in this tool official?
No. The defaults are a starting point, not your account’s rates. Etsy’s rates vary by country and change over time, so enter the current figures from your Etsy account or the official fee page.
What is the difference between net proceeds and profit?
Net proceeds is what is left after Etsy fees. Profit subtracts your product cost and the shipping you actually pay, so it reflects what you really keep.
Why is my effective fee rate higher than the listed percentages?
The fixed payment fee and the per-listing fee add to the percentage-based fees. On small orders these flat fees make the effective rate noticeably higher.
Does this include Etsy advertising costs?
No. Offsite Ads and Etsy Ads are separate and depend on your spend and sales. Add them manually if you want a fuller picture.
Can I use this to set my prices?
