The general method
Percent = (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100
Works for every fraction, including ones whose decimal never terminates.
The shortcut, when the denominator divides 100
Scale numerator and denominator to /100
3/4 × 25/25 = 75/100 = 75%. No long division at all.
A percent is not a separate kind of number — it is a fraction whose denominator is already 100. “Per cent” means per hundred, so 75% is simply another way of writing 75/100. That is the whole reason the conversion works: to turn a fraction into a percent, you are only rewriting it so the bottom number becomes 100, and the top number is then the percentage. Dividing and multiplying by 100 is the mechanical way to do that for any fraction at all, which is why it is the method taught first and the one the calculator above runs.
But you often do not need it. If the denominator divides evenly into 100 — that is 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, and 100 — you can rescale the fraction directly and never perform a division. For 3/4, ask what turns 4 into 100: multiplying by 25. Do the same to the top, and 3 × 25 = 75, so 3/4 = 75/100 = 75%. For 2/5, multiply both parts by 20: 2/5 = 40/100 = 40%. For 7/20, multiply by 5: 35/100 = 35%. This is the fastest way to convert a fraction to a percentage without a calculator, and it is exact, because you have not rounded anything — you have only renamed the same fraction.
When the denominator does not divide 100 — 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, and so on — you fall back on the division. 5/8 means 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625, and 0.625 × 100 = 62.5%. Multiplying by 100 is itself a shortcut you can do in your head: it moves the decimal point two places to the right, so 0.625 becomes 62.5 without any real arithmetic. That single fact is what makes the whole conversion tractable by hand. The awkward part is never the ×100; it is the division, and only when the division does not come out evenly, which is the case the section on repeating decimals below deals with properly.
One habit is worth keeping regardless of method: reduce the fraction first when you can see a common factor. 50/100 is 1/2, and it is easier to convert 1/2 than to grind through 50 ÷ 100. The calculator does this automatically and shows it as the first step whenever your input was not already in lowest terms, so you can see what it did rather than wonder why the numbers changed. Reducing never changes the percent — 50/100 and 1/2 are the same number, so both are 50%.

Two things stand out in that table. The quarters, fifths, tenths, twentieths, and twenty-fifths all land on clean percentages, because their denominators divide 100. The thirds, sixths, sevenths, ninths, and twelfths never do — 1/3 is 33.33% rounded but 33 1/3% exactly, and no number of decimal places will ever finish it. The fourth column is there because rounding quietly throws that away, and for a mark scheme, a recipe, or a split of money, the exact form is often the one you actually want.
The two most-searched rows are the simplest ones. 3/4 as a percent and a decimal is 75% and 0.75. 1/4 as a percent and a decimal is 25% and 0.25. Both are worth memorising along with 1/2 = 50% and 1/10 = 10%, because almost every other everyday fraction can be reached from them: 3/8 is half of 3/4, so 37.5%; 1/8 is half of 1/4, so 12.5%; 1/5 is 20%, so 2/5 is 40%. For anything the chart does not list — 13/17, 7/23, or a fraction from a real measurement — enter it in the calculator, which handles any numerator and denominator up to fifteen digits.
2 3/4 is 275%, not 75% — the whole number is the part people drop
A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction written together, and the most common mistake in converting one is to convert only the fraction and forget the whole. 2 3/4 is not 75%. It is two whole units plus three quarters, and since one whole unit is 100%, the answer has to be more than 200%. Convert the mixed number to an improper fraction first: multiply the whole by the denominator, add the numerator, and keep the same denominator. So 2 3/4 becomes (2 × 4 + 3)/4 = 11/4, and 11 ÷ 4 × 100 = 275%.
The calculator has a separate whole-number box for exactly this reason: put the 2 in it, leave 3 over 4 below, and it performs the improper-fraction step for you and shows it in the working. Leave that box blank and it treats the input as a simple fraction. The same box handles a plain whole number — enter 3 with 0 over 1 and you get 300%, which is the sanity check worth remembering: any fraction equal to 1 converts to 100%, so anything larger than 1 must convert to more than 100%.
Improper fractions behave the same way without needing the extra box, since 11/4 and 2 3/4 are the same number. If your fraction already has a numerator bigger than its denominator, just enter it as it is. The result panel shows the mixed-number form alongside the percent, so you can read 11/4 back as 2 3/4 and confirm the two agree. Negative mixed numbers follow the convention every textbook uses: the minus sign applies to the whole quantity, so −2 1/2 is −(2 + 1/2) = −5/2 = −250%, not −1 1/2.
1/3 is 33.33% rounded and 33 1/3% exactly — and the difference is real money
Some fractions have decimals that never end. 1/3 is 0.333… forever, so as a percent it is 33.333…%, usually written 33.33%. That rounding is fine for most purposes and wrong for some. Three shares of 33.33% add up to 99.99%, not 100% — the missing hundredth has to go somewhere, and on a large enough total that hundredth is a real amount. The exact answer is 33 1/3%, and three of those add to exactly 100%.
This is why the calculator reports both. The rounded percent is what you quote; the exact percent — written as a fraction of a percent, like 33 1/3% or 16 2/3% or 14 2/7% — is what you use when the total has to reconcile. Which fractions do this is not random: a fraction in lowest terms has a terminating decimal if and only if its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. That is why halves, quarters, fifths, eighths, tenths, and twentieths all terminate, and thirds, sixths, sevenths, ninths, and twelfths never do. The tool applies that test to your input and labels the result exact or rounded accordingly.
There is a second, quieter reason the exact form matters here, and it is about how the arithmetic is done rather than how it is displayed. This calculator does not convert your fraction into a decimal number and work from there. It keeps the numerator and denominator as whole numbers throughout and only rounds at the moment it prints a figure. Ordinary binary floating-point arithmetic — what a spreadsheet or a quickly written script uses — cannot represent 0.029 exactly, so multiplying it by 100 famously returns 2.9000000000000004 rather than 2.9. Keeping the fraction intact avoids that entire class of error, which is also why the tool can tell you that 1/49 is exactly 100/49 percent instead of handing back 2.0408163265306123 and calling it exact.
Rounding convention is worth one sentence of caution. This tool rounds half away from zero, so 2.675 becomes 2.68 — the answer most people expect, and one that a naive decimal implementation gets wrong for reasons that have nothing to do with the mathematics. Your school, marking scheme, or accounting policy may specify a different rule, such as rounding half to even. Where the figure matters, check which convention applies rather than assuming the displayed number is the required one.
Going back: 12.5% is 1/8, and 150% is 1 1/2
The reverse conversion is the same relationship read in the other direction. Because a percent is a number out of a hundred, converting a percent to a fraction means writing it over 100 and reducing. 75% is 75/100, and dividing both parts by 25 gives 3/4. 40% is 40/100, which reduces to 2/5. That is the entire method, and the third mode of the calculator does it with the reduction shown.
Two cases need a little more care. A percent that is itself a decimal — 12.5% — cannot go straight over 100 as a whole number, so clear the decimal first: 12.5/100 becomes 125/1000, which reduces to 1/8. And a percent above 100 gives an improper fraction, which is usually more readable as a mixed number: 150% is 150/100 = 3/2 = 1 1/2. The calculator returns both forms, along with the decimal, so you can quote whichever the question asks for. Getting a percent to a fraction in simplest form is just those two steps followed by cancelling the greatest common divisor, which the tool does exactly rather than by trial.
Converting a decimal to a fraction works the same way, using place value instead of 100. 0.375 has three decimal places, so it is 375/1000, which reduces to 3/8 — and as a percent, 37.5%. That is what the decimal mode does, and it reads the digits you typed rather than the nearest binary approximation of them, so 0.1 becomes exactly 1/10. Every conversion in the tool round-trips: convert a fraction to a percent and back, and you land on the fraction you started with, in lowest terms.
On a physical scientific calculator, one key does most of the work
Doing this on a handheld scientific calculator is straightforward once you know which key toggles between the fraction and the decimal. On most Casio fx-series models the fraction key is marked with a small stacked box, and the S⇔D key switches the display between the exact (fraction or surd) form and the decimal form. Enter the fraction, press S⇔D to see it as a decimal, then multiply by 100. Some models have a dedicated mixed-number key labelled a b/c, which enters a whole number and a fraction as separate parts and can convert between mixed and improper forms.
If your calculator has no fraction key at all, nothing is lost: type the numerator, press divide, type the denominator, press equals, and multiply by 100. That is the same two-step method as above, and it is why the question of how to turn a fraction into a decimal on a calculator has the same answer as how to turn it into a percent — the decimal is the intermediate step, and the percent is that decimal with the point moved two places. A calculator’s % key is usually not what you want here; on most models it applies a percentage to another number rather than converting one, so the plain ×100 is both clearer and more reliable.
The advantage of the tool on this page over a handheld is the part a handheld cannot do: it shows the exact value when the decimal repeats, rather than filling the display with digits and rounding at whatever width the screen happens to be. A physical calculator will show 1/3 as 0.3333333333 and leave you to infer the pattern. This one tells you the answer is 33 1/3%.
How it is taught in class, and why the method never changes
Percentages usually enter the curriculum around class 7, and the rule taught there is the one at the top of this page: multiply the fraction by 100 and write a percent sign. It looks like a rule to memorise, but it is worth seeing why it is true, because the reason is what makes every later case obvious. Multiplying by 100 and then labelling the result “per hundred” are two operations that cancel out — you have scaled the number up by 100 and then declared that the unit is one hundredth. The value is unchanged; only its name is different. That is why 1/2, 0.5, and 50% are three spellings of one number.
The standard school worked example is 3/4. Multiply by 100: 3/4 × 100 = 300/4 = 75. Add the sign: 75%. The calculator’s step list follows the same order deliberately, so a student can check their own working line by line rather than only comparing final answers — which is the difference between finding a mistake and knowing there is one. For a fraction whose denominator divides 100, the scaling shortcut in the first section is usually faster and is the same mathematics; teachers often introduce it as the “equivalent fractions” method.
