How to read your result

Round the cubic-yard (or cubic-metre) figure up to whatever increment your supplier delivers in — most yards quote in whole or half units, and rounding down risks a second delivery. The weight figure next to it uses the density shown; if your supplier quotes a different density for their specific product, type it into the Material density field and both numbers update together.

Worked examples

US: a 20 ft × 10 ft path at 4 inches deep with a 5% waste factor is 66.7 cu ft, or 2.47 cu yd before waste — 2.59 cu yd after. At the default crushed-stone density of 1.4 tons/yd³, that's about 3.63 tons to order.

Metric: a 6 m × 3 m driveway strip at 10 cm deep with the same 5% waste factor is 1.8 m³ before waste, 1.89 m³ after — about 3.14 tonnes at the default 20mm-gravel density of 1.66 t/m³.

Assumptions

  • Volume = length × width × depth, with depth applied uniformly across the whole area — length × width × (depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27 for cubic yards, or length × width × (depth ÷ 100) for cubic metres.
  • Crushed stone / gravel (#57, 3/4 in, ~20mm) defaults to 1.4 US tons per cubic yard (≈1.66 tonnes per cubic metre), per LandCare Stone — the same size class of stone sold as "#57" in the US and "20mm gravel" in the UK.
  • Pea gravel defaults to 1.35 tons/yd³ (≈1.60 t/m³), and crusher run / road base defaults to 1.23 tons/yd³ (≈1.46 t/m³) — both drawn from landscape-supply figures and adjustable.
  • Material density is a genuinely disputed number — real supplier quotes for what is nominally the same product can differ by 10-20%. The density field is editable so you can enter your own supplier's figure.
  • A 5% default waste factor covers ordinary compaction and an uneven sub-base; raise it toward 10% for a compacted base layer.

Limitations

  • Density varies by stone type, size, and moisture — wet material can weigh 5-10% more than dry, and this estimate cannot know your supplier's exact product.
  • Assumes a uniform depth across a rectangular area. For an irregular or curved area, break it into rectangles and add the volumes, or use your longest dimensions and expect a small over-estimate.
  • Does not account for a two-layer driveway build (a compactable base course plus a finish layer) — calculate each layer separately with its own depth and add the results.
  • Delivery minimums, bulk-bag sizes, and per-ton or per-tonne pricing vary by supplier and region — this tool estimates quantity, not cost.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons or yards of gravel do I need?

Multiply length × width × depth to get volume, then convert to cubic yards (÷27 if measuring in feet and inches) and multiply by the material's density to get tons. This calculator does that conversion for you and lets you switch between cubic yards/tons (US) and cubic metres/tonnes (metric).

How much gravel do I need for a driveway?

A typical residential driveway uses a 4-6 inch base layer plus a 2-3 inch top layer of finish stone, for 6-9 inches total (8-12 inches under heavy vehicles). Calculate each layer separately with its own depth, since a compactable base and a decorative top layer usually use different, differently-priced material.

What is #57 stone, 3/4 inch gravel, or 20mm gravel?

These are the same size class of crushed stone — roughly 3/4 to 1 inch graded angular stone — sold under different regional naming conventions: "#57" and "3/4 inch" in the US, "20mm gravel" or "20mm shingle" in the UK. This calculator's default "Crushed stone / gravel" option covers all three names.

How much does a ton of gravel cover?

At the default crushed-stone density (1.4 tons/yd³), one ton covers roughly 108 sq ft at 2 inches deep, 72 sq ft at 3 inches, or 54 sq ft at 4 inches. Lighter or heavier materials — pea gravel or crusher run — cover a different area per ton, which is exactly why this calculator uses the density you select rather than one fixed coverage number.

Does this work for UK or metric gravel (m³, tonnes)?

Yes — switch the Units field to metric to enter length and width in metres and depth in centimetres, and get results in cubic metres and tonnes. The default 20mm gravel density (≈1.66 t/m³) is cross-checked against a UK supplier's own figure of ~1.7 tonnes per cubic metre.

How much pea gravel do I need?

Select "Pea gravel" from the Material dropdown — it defaults to 1.35 tons per cubic yard (about 2,700 lb), lighter than angular crushed stone of the same volume. Pea gravel is rounder and settles differently, so lean toward the higher end of the waste factor range for pathways and beds.

How much gravel do I need for a French drain?

French drains typically use 6-12 inches of depth filled with angular crushed stone (not rounded pea gravel, which packs too tightly and restricts water flow) along the trench length. Enter the trench length as "length," the trench width, and your fill depth to get the volume.

How much gravel do I need for a base layer?

A compacted base layer (crusher run or road base) is usually 4-6 inches under a driveway or paver patio. Select "Crusher run / road base" for its own, denser default figure, and calculate the base layer as a separate pass from any decorative top layer.

What does a bag of gravel from a home center cover?

A typical 0.5 cubic foot bag covers about 2 sq ft at 3 inches deep. For small jobs under roughly half a cubic yard, bagged material is often cheaper and easier than arranging bulk delivery — this calculator flags that in a warning once your result drops below that threshold.

Should I order in cubic yards/metres or tons/tonnes?

Bulk gravel and crushed stone are usually sold by weight (tons or tonnes), while some suppliers quote by volume. This calculator gives you both from the same inputs, so you can match whichever figure your supplier quotes — and use the density field to match their specific product if it differs from the default.
